Introduction

Among the countless Murugan temples of Tamil Nadu, Siruvapuri Arulmigu Balasubramanya Swamy Temple occupies a unique place in the hearts of devotees. Revered as a powerful Parihara Sthalam (Temple of Divine Remedies), this ancient shrine is believed to grant wishes related to marriage, childbirth, health, prosperity, home ownership, and success in life.

The temple is celebrated not only for its miraculous traditions but also because it was glorified by Saint Arunagirinathar, who composed four Tiruppugazh hymns in praise of Lord Murugan here. One of these is among the rare Archana Tiruppugazh hymns, making Siruvapuri an exceptionally sacred pilgrimage destination.

A Temple Blessed by Arunagirinathar

According to Tiruppugazh researchers, Arunagirinathar composed nearly 10,000 Tiruppugazh hymns, but only about 1,330 survive today.

Out of the 224 sacred temples praised in these hymns, Siruvapuri occupies a distinguished position.

Among all Murugan temples:

• Siruvapuri is one of only eight temples where Arunagirinathar composed four Tiruppugazh hymns.

One remarkable aspect highlighted by Arunagirinathar is that devotees need not undertake severe austerities or prolonged fasting to receive Lord Murugan’s grace.

Instead, he sings that simply remembering the Lord of Siruvapuri with sincere devotion is enough for Murugan to manifest His blessings.

This compassionate aspect of Lord Balasubramanya has drawn thousands of devotees for centuries.

The Temple Famous for Marriage Blessings

Perhaps the greatest reason devotees visit Siruvapuri is its reputation for removing obstacles to marriage.

The Six-Week Prayer Ritual

Devotees visit the temple once every week for six consecutive weeks, always on the same weekday and at approximately the same time.

For those seeking marriage:

• Worship Lord Balasubramanya.
• Perform Archana to Valli Manavala Peruman.
• Continue the worship for six weeks.

On the sixth visit:

• Perform Archana to six principal deities.
• Receive the sacred garland from Valli Manavala Peruman.
• Wear the garland as a symbolic marriage garland.
• Circumambulate the temple six times.
• Preserve the garland at home until marriage takes place.

After marriage, the couple returns to the temple to offer thanksgiving prayers and ties the preserved garland to the temple’s sacred tree.

During the first five weeks, devotees traditionally offer:

The Sacred Lemon Worship

One unique custom followed here involves lemons blessed during worship.

Every week devotees take home one blessed lemon and worship it until the following visit.

The lemon from the previous week is respectfully immersed in clean water before replacing it with the newly blessed one.

The final lemon received during the sixth week is preserved until the devotee’s prayer is fulfilled.

Temple tradition says this practice strengthens faith and invites divine grace.

The Tiruppugazh to Be Recited

During the six-week worship, devotees are encouraged to recite Arunagirinathar’s famous Tiruppugazh beginning with:

“Andar Pathi Kudiyera…”

The sculpture captures the divine wedding moment of Lord Murugan and Goddess Valli with extraordinary realism.

Valli is depicted with graceful shyness, modesty, and gentle elegance, while Murugan lovingly holds her hand.

The intricate craftsmanship makes this one of the finest Murugan wedding sculptures in Tamil Nadu.

Healing Worship

Devotees suffering from chronic illnesses perform a special Abhishekam using Nelli Mulli powder for 48 consecutive days.

The powder may be handed to the temple priest, who includes it in the daily Abhishekam on behalf of the devotee.
