The Sacred Shrine That Gave Birth to One of Tamil Nadu’s Greatest Spiritual Treasures

Vayalur – The Seventh Abode of Murugan

Though Lord Murugan is traditionally worshipped in the Six Sacred Abodes (Arupadai Veedu), countless devotees lovingly refer to Vayalur as the Seventh Padai Veedu or “Murugan’s Battlefield of Grace.”

Lord Murugan appeared once again.

This time He gave a direct command.

“Come to Vayalur.”

Obeying the divine instruction, Arunagirinathar journeyed to Vayalur.

Before entering the temple, he immersed himself in the sacred Sakthi Theertham, a holy tank believed to have been created by Murugan Himself with His divine Vel.

Inside the temple, Murugan manifested in a radiant form with one divine face and four arms.

The Lord instructed:

“Sing the Tiruppugazh so that the world may attain liberation.”

Overwhelmed with devotion, Arunagirinathar prayed:

“O Lord, You blessed me with the ability to sing at Tiruvannamalai. Now teach me how I should sing.”

Murugan lovingly revealed the essence of the Tiruppugazh.

He instructed the saint to glorify:

Arunagirinathar Never Forgot Vayalur

Although Arunagirinathar later visited numerous Murugan temples including:

…he continued to remember Vayalur in many of his compositions.

The Origin of Vayalur Temple

Ancient tradition narrates an extraordinary legend.

A Chola king once came to this forest to hunt wild animals that were destroying agricultural fields.

Exhausted by thirst, he searched desperately for water.

Instead, he discovered a flourishing sugarcane plant with three branches.

When the sugarcane was cut, blood flowed from it.

Astonished, the king ordered his men to investigate.

Beneath the sugarcane they discovered a naturally manifested Shiva Lingam.

Realizing he had witnessed a divine miracle, the king immediately built a temple at that sacred spot.

This became today’s Vayalur Temple.

Since the Shiva Lingam emerged from the sugarcane, the deity was originally worshipped as Agneeswarar, later becoming known as Adinathar.

Poyya Ganapathi – The One Who Removes Illusion

After worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Aadinayaki, devotees encounter one of Vayalur’s most unique shrines.

This is Poyya Ganapathi.

Tradition says that it was this Ganesha who blessed Arunagirinathar with the divine power to compose Tiruppugazh.

“Poyya” means falsehood that disappears before Truth.

Many scholars observe that almost every Tiruppugazh hymn begins by describing worldly delusion before leading the seeker toward spiritual wisdom.

Here Murugan appears seated gracefully upon His peacock with incomparable beauty.

Many Siddhas are believed to have performed tapas here and attained spiritual realization.

Standing before Murugan’s sanctum, devotees experience an unusual intimacy.

It almost feels as though He deliberately chose this position to remain near His devotees, showering them with boundless grace.

If Arunagirinathar gave Vayalur its immortal hymns, Sri Kripananda Variyar Swamigal gave Vayalur back to the Tamil people.

For over forty years, Variyar travelled across Tamil Nadu speaking tirelessly about the glory of Vayalur Murugan.

Every discourse began with heartfelt reverence to the Lord of Vayalur.

He also undertook enormous efforts to collect, preserve, explain, and publish the Tiruppugazh hymns of Arunagirinathar.

Through his famous publication “Tiruppugazh Amirtham,” he provided detailed commentary, explanations, and spiritual insights that made these divine compositions accessible to future generations.

Perhaps his greatest contribution was leading the construction of the magnificent Rajagopuram of Vayalur Temple.
